Do you know what lazy eye is?




Lazy eye is also known as Amblyopia. Sight in which the brain doesn’t stimulate inputs from one eye and overtime the other one. It results in decreased vision in an eye and typically appears normal. Amblyopia is the most common disease where results the vision in a single eye in children and younger adults. It can be seen in children at the age of five. Rarely 1-5% of the population get affected by lazy eye.

Effect of lazy eye is more in children than adults. Parents couldn’t recognize this lazy eye at initial time and promptly treated, reduced vision can be avoided. But if left untreated, lazy eye can cause severe disability in the vision of affected eye, including legal blindness

Diseases can be occurred if the lazy eye left untreated or not improper treatment is provided

·         Refractive errors

·         Strabismus

·         Cataracts

·         Droopy eyelid (ptosis)

Treatment

Treatment of Amblyopia consists of correcting the optical often forcing use of the amblyopic eye, by patching the good eye. If there is any overpatching in the treatment then good eye when treating amblyopia, "reverse amblyopia" can result.  Treatment is continued until there is proper vision. Deprivation amblyopia is treated by removing the difficulty as soon as possible by the use of amblyopic eye. The earlier the treatment is initiated the less psychologically damaging can be observed. If treatment is initiated early chance of achieving vision is greater.
